April 30th - May 4, 2012

Wow! Tomorrow is May and only 22 more school days left until the end of the school year. This next month will be a busy month with assessing and reviewing second grade concepts, sharing electronic portfolios (May 8th @ 8:15), MOSI field trip (May 10th), and Splash Day (May 18th), as well as sharing our African Animal projects, and end of year party.

This morning the students discovered that their caterpillars had made their chrysalis' and now (except for an occasional twitch), the pupa appears to be lifeless. The pupa is hanging head-down and some of the butterfly structures are forming under the protective shell. We will continue observing this stage (which last for about 7 to 10 days) this week and students will make predictions about what will emerge from the chrysalis.

Current Events begins again this week with Gabby and John presenting on Tuesday, Lucy and Connor on Wednesday, Quentin and Skyler on Thursday and Lucile and Ethan on Friday.

Thanks to all those dedicated parents who work in the library each Tuesday. We appreciate all that you do.

Our Parent Reader this week is M. Camp.

We will continue our review in language arts and begin our unit on poetry. In math, we will finish off our work with fractions and do some review so the students are ready to complete their next math assessment. In social studies, the students will finish off their African animal project, that they will be hoping to share with you next Tuesday (following the electronic portfolio sharing session).

Spelling words this week are made up of vocabulary words from various subjects including the Life Cycle of the Lady Painted Butterfly, math and social studies. Spelling practice (as well as reading) is a part of the homework routine each day. Your support at home is most appreciated and really does make a big difference.

This week's spelling list includes the following words:

adaptation, caterpillar, chrysalis, continent, emerge, equivalent, fraction, habitat, metamorphosis, molting, predator, proboscis

I wish you a wonderful week -

April 24-27, 2012

I hope you enjoyed your three day weekend, as much as I did. This week is a four day school week, but a busy one. We will be engaging in various Earth Day related activities, observe our growing caterpillars, work on creating our visual aids representing African animals, as well as enjoy a trip to the Fine Arts Museum on Wednesday. My class will be touring the Egyptian exhibit at about 11:15 and then when finished, will eat lunch next to the museum. After eating, we hope to tour the general area of the museum. If you did not order a SAGE sack lunch for your child, please pack your child's lunch in disposable packaging, seeing we will not be allowed to take our lunch boxes into the museum with us.

On Tuesday, May 8th at 8:15, the students will be sharing their Electronic Portfolios with you. Please mark this day and time on your calendar. Students will share a collection of class work, Spanish, music, technology and art work at this time. It should not be missed.

Second Grade will visit MOSI on Thursday, May 10th and be leaving school just after 8:30am. A Sage lunch order form will be sent out this week, if you would like to order your child a Sage sack lunch for this trip.

There is no Current Events scheduled this week. I will be sending home a new calendar for May in the next couple of days. Please check your child's Take Home Folder for this.

April 9-13

Some of the students heard that it was my birthday on Saturday and surprised me with flowers, cards and a morning snack on Friday. Thanks to Mrs. Camp and Mrs. Piper for organizing the gift cards, donuts, fruit and drinks. It was a treat and a birthday to remember.

Today was "Wear Your Hat to School Day" promoting sun safety. I was so proud to see all the students wearing their hats. We have been talking about the importance of being sun smart, especially in this hot Florida sun. I hope to see all the students wearing their hats everyday, like they did today.

Tomorrow, second grade will go to the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg. We will be leaving school after 10:30 and be eating lunch by the Museum. We will tour the museum at 12:00. The cost is 18.25, if you plan on meeting us there. We will return to school after our tour of the gallery.
