April 24-27, 2012

I hope you enjoyed your three day weekend, as much as I did. This week is a four day school week, but a busy one. We will be engaging in various Earth Day related activities, observe our growing caterpillars, work on creating our visual aids representing African animals, as well as enjoy a trip to the Fine Arts Museum on Wednesday. My class will be touring the Egyptian exhibit at about 11:15 and then when finished, will eat lunch next to the museum. After eating, we hope to tour the general area of the museum. If you did not order a SAGE sack lunch for your child, please pack your child's lunch in disposable packaging, seeing we will not be allowed to take our lunch boxes into the museum with us.

On Tuesday, May 8th at 8:15, the students will be sharing their Electronic Portfolios with you. Please mark this day and time on your calendar. Students will share a collection of class work, Spanish, music, technology and art work at this time. It should not be missed.

Second Grade will visit MOSI on Thursday, May 10th and be leaving school just after 8:30am. A Sage lunch order form will be sent out this week, if you would like to order your child a Sage sack lunch for this trip.

There is no Current Events scheduled this week. I will be sending home a new calendar for May in the next couple of days. Please check your child's Take Home Folder for this.

Language Arts - Review (see last week's spelling list)
Reading: African Animals Research
Writing: Publish Prompt
Handwriting: Review letters

Mathematics - Unit 8 - Fractions
* Equivalent Fractions
* Find pairs of equivalent fractions by using region models
* Comparing fractions

Social Studies - Africa
Students will work on their African Animal project. If time permits, we will do a scavenger hunt relating to Africa.

Science - Life Cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly
Students will observe the structures and activities of caterpillars more closely and predict what changes may occur next. Students will also notice evidence of changes, such as shed skin, the shed head capsule, or increase in frass and decreases in food.

As a movement or dance exercise, students will dramatize how a caterpillar moves in order to shed its skin.

Have a wonderful week -

Ms. O'Mullane
