Week of January 31

This is a very busy week for us. Tomorrow we attend a play,“Madeline and the Red Hat" and Wednesday is Groundhog Day. Thursday is the 100th Day of School and Friday is Grandparents Day! The schedule is as follows: 8:30-9am Breakfast; 9-9:45 Program in the Janet Root Theater (yes, our second graders will perform); 10-11 Grandparents or Special Friends tour the school guided by the children; 12pm dismissal. Times are approximate. What a busy and exciting week ahead!

Some other important dates are as follows:
Conference Day - Feb. 10th
Town Meeting Presentation - Feb. 14th

We will begin Current Events next week and you will be receiving a schedule to keep track of the time your child will share.

SHHHHHHHH!!! Valentine's Day is coming up and to celebrate, we are asking that you send a Valentine's card to your child here at school. Please address this to your child, c/o Ms. O'Mullane. I ask that you keep this a secret. After a snack on the 14th, we will open these up.

Mathematics - Unit 5 Review, Progress Check and Unit 6
Student will review the concepts taught in Unit 5 (3D and 2D Shapes) and do a written assessment to check their progress. Unit 6 will be introduced, so be on the lookout for the new Family Letter, that your child will bring home on Thursday in their homework folder. This new unit focuses on whole-number operations and number stories. Please continue helping your child practice ballpark estimates and the partial sums addition method.

Social Studies - Australia
We will continue learning about Australia and the students have a research assignment about Australian landmarks.
It is Australia Day on Wednesday (January 26th) which commemorates the arrival of the British colonists in Sydney Cove in 1788. So we will be doing some fun Australian activities, including learning Waltzing Matilda (a well-known Australian song).

Science - Rock Cycle
The students are really showing interest in learning about rocks and minerals and last Friday enjoyed a visit from Julia C. dad, who showed us his own rock collection (including an opal). The students are beginning to see the difference between igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks and have been having a fun time trying to classify their class rock collection. We will continue with this investigation this week.

Week of January 10th

Welcome to another week in second grade. The students are well rested and motivated to be back. A routine week this week in class, with Library and Picture Lady/Gentleman on Tuesday and Parent/Mystery Reader on Friday.

Here is our week at a glance. Keep encouraging your child to practice the weekly spelling words, student-friendly definitions. They also should read on a daily basis.

I have decided to give the students a rest from sharing Current Events and we will start this up again in February.

The students have been enjoying the critical thinking exercises we have been doing at the start of each day and are showing improvement in problem solving and beginning to see the importance of being reflective.

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year and welcome back. I hope you all had a wonderful break. As I write this blog, I think about how thankful I am to be working at Shorecrest and trying to make a difference in the lives of your children. I look forward to watching your children grow and develop over the next five months and try to make a difference in their lives.

I also want to thank you all again for your generous gifts and warm wishes leading up to the holiday period. It is such a pleasure working with your children and delight in seeing their enthusiasm for learning.
