Unit 6 will be introduced, so be on the lookout for the new Family Letter, that your child will bring home on Thursday in their homework folder. This new unit focuses on whole-number operations and number stories. Please continue helping your child practice ballpark estimates and the partial sums addition method.

Social Studies - Australia
We will continue learning about Australia and the students have a research assignment about Australian landmarks.
It is Australia Day on Wednesday (January 26th) which commemorates the arrival of the British colonists in Sydney Cove in 1788. So we will be doing some fun Australian activities, including learning Waltzing Matilda (a well-known Australian song).

Science - Rock Cycle
The students are really showing interest in learning about rocks and minerals and last Friday enjoyed a visit from Julia C. dad, who showed us his own rock collection (including an opal). The students are beginning to see the difference between igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks and have been having a fun time trying to classify their class rock collection. We will continue with this investigation this week.
