Week of March 28, 2011

A jam packed week ahead of us.

Picture Day will be this Wednesday, March 30th and orders should be placed online. Spirit Day is on Thursday and the students can wear green and gold colors. The Groundbreaking Ceremony will take place on Friday, April 1 at 8:30am. The ceremony will be held in the area between the theater and Sher Center. We will attend before leaving school for our morning field trip to the Fine Arts Museum. Field Day is next Tuesday, April 5th and if you are interested in helping out, please email one of our coaches.

Spelling Review: ounce, careful, suitable, fourteen, allowance, scary, gloomy, ignore, knew, course, compare, forecast, powerful, prepare, sore, cruise, juicy, cartoon, juggling, race
Reading: Readers' Theater, "Town Hall"
Fluency: Review expression and reading rate (see previous blogs)
Comprehension: Review story plot, using story structure, graphic aids and summarizing information (tell about the most important ideas in one or two sentences)
Robust Vocabulary: race, juggling, accomplish, feasible, attend, report, area, serve, preference, alternatives
Grammar: Review present-tense action verbs, subject-verb agreement, past tense verbs, and forms of be
Writing: Prompt - Planning and Writing a First Draft Expository Story

Mathematics - Unit 8 (Be on the lookout for the new Math Family Letter)
* Review basic fraction concepts
* Exploring the link of a fraction amount to the size of the ONE, or whole
* Introduce the concepts of volume
* Use fractions to name parts of collections

Science - The Life Cycle of a Butterfly
Students prepare the food cups vital to the survival of the caterpillars and learn how to care for them. The students meet the caterpillars and record their first observations.

Social Studies - Africa
* Africa is the second largest continent
* The equator runs through the middle of Africa
* Africa is surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans
* Africa has deserts, rain forests and grassy savannas
* There are over fifty countries on this continent

We will also start reading various literature with an African theme, including Ashanti to Zulu by Margaret Musgrove and illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon.
